EDUCATION SYSTEM

The British higher education system has five stages of education: early years, primary years, secondary education, Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE). Britons enter the education system at the age of three and up to 16 are obliged to attend school (compulsory education), while afterward is upon their choice.

16 year old students in England take GCSE examinations, which mark the end of compulsory education. In the 16–18 age group, sixth form education is not compulsory, but mandatory education or training until the age of 18. High schools offer statutory education for students from ages 11 to 16, although some also have sixth form centres, which offer courses for students aged 16 to 19. Students over 16 typically study in the sixth form of a school, in a separate sixth form college, or in a Further Education (FE) College. FE colleges offer a more relaxed environment in which students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their education. FE students choose their own study programme and are only expected to be on campus during class times.

The UK higher education is the level of education that follows the secondary school at the hierarchy of educational system in the UK. When the high school is over, Britons have to sit in a standard examination, which makes them eligible or not to continue their education in the higher level of education. Higher education in England is provided by Higher Education (HE) colleges, university colleges, universities and private colleges. Students normally enter higher education as undergraduates from age 18 onwards, and can study for a wide variety of vocational and academic qualifications. The typical first degree offered at English universities is the bachelor's degree with honours, which usually lasts for three years.
